Open Air Theatre, Regent’s Park, London

Commissioned by the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre to design a sculpture that celebrates the life of the late David Conville OBE, the theatres past director.

The inspiration behind the sculpture draws from its unique setting which the sculpture is situated and sited within the captivating Open Air Theatre, centred at the heart of Regent’s Park.

The form of the sculpture derives from an abstract interpretation of the auditorium that aims to capture an essence of what it must feel like to play in the open, exposed to the elements and captures the sense of envelopment that is the centre of the stage. The form further echoes the evolving dialogue between actor, audience, and nature with its changing of height from left to right and front to back.

The blade like grass fins of the sculpture are made from weathering steel that will in time, weather down to organic tones of browns and oranges akin to the organic surrounding that the sculpture is situated in.

The sculpture nestled between the foliage of the Theatres lawn, celebrates the life and the achievements of David Conville in what he gave and dedicated for his love of the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.
